The Spirit of Summer on Lake St. Clair

By Alexis Bohlinger
Nothing says summer quite like a boat ride on Lake St. Clair. Whether it’s the warm breeze, the sun sparkling on the water, or just being surrounded by friends and family, there’s something magical about getting out on the lake. And now, there’s a fresh and festive way to enjoy the water — even if you don’t own a boat. And you can celebrate life’s big (and small) moments, thanks to The Spirit of Lake St. Clair.
Captain John Fanti, an avid boater and lifelong water enthusiast, grew up with a deep appreciation for the lake. “I always knew that this boat would be a great tour boat for the public,” he said. After working as an engine mechanic on a private ferry boat at Belle Isle, Fanti and his family purchased The Spirit in 2020 and began an extensive restoration project. Now in its third season, the vessel is based out of Blossom Heath Park along St. Clair Shores’ iconic Nautical Mile.
The 40-foot-long, 20-foot-wide boat comfortably accommodates up to 30 passengers. “It’s shaped like a football,” Fanti describes. “Very stable and super comfortable.
You’re not exposed to direct sun, and the perspective is great for sightseeing.” Describing the boat as “his baby,” Fanti shared that he poured his heart into the restoration. “We kept the boat’s original nostalgia, but it’s now sparkling and brand new.”
With a mix of public and private cruises, The Spirit offers a wide variety of unique on-the- water experiences. Private cruises start as low as $499 for small parties, and options are nearly endless. The boat has hosted corporate outings, birthdays, weddings, proposals, and memorials. If you’re looking for more of a chill night out on the water, you can hop aboard every other Wednesday for their popular karaoke night. “It’s BYOB, and $45 gets you two hours of sing-along fun,” Fanti said. “They were a hit last year.”
Operating from early May through Halloween, The Spirit also throws its biggest bash of the year for the spooky season — a festive Halloween cruise complete with costumes, goodie bags and themed fun. “Another popular cruise was our Lions tailgate party with coney dogs for the diehard fans,” said Fanti. “We do all kinds of events.”
The city has welcomed the venture with open arms. “St. Clair Shores has been awesome,” Fanti said. “People are curious and excited. The Nautical Mile is a special place, and I wanted to offer something classy — an elevated way to experience the lake.”
Whether you’re celebrating a milestone, planning a fun night with friends, or simply craving a new way to soak up summer, cruising aboard The Spirit of Lake St. Clair is a memory in the making.
