Macy Vargo and Max Saylor attended the same middle school and worked the same bar while they attended Michigan State University. Macy graduated with a degree in hospitality business, while Max received a degree in sociology.

“He was the manager and I was a bartender and working together enabled us to rekindle our friendship,” Macy said.

That relationship progressed to an engagement in May 2024 and a wedding in April 2025. Macy put her degree and experience to work by planning their wedding, which took place at Golden Hawk Golf & Banquets in Casco. Choosing the venue was a no-brainer.

“It’s owned by my dad and I was the event coordinator there. I didn’t originally want it there because I didn’t want to have my wedding where I worked. But, after touring various venues, I felt that Golden Hawk was my best choice. I especially liked the fact that it has a second floor, which allowed my guests to enjoy the exceptional views of the golf course,” she said.

“One of the things that truly made our wedding day truly memorable is that the people I worked with went out of their way to make the day special. I shared my vision of my wedding day with them and they turned that vision into a reality. Everyone was so supportive. For example, our golf shop manager showed up that day in a suit to work his shift. I am so thankful that I was able to share my special day with my staff,” Macy added.

Planning your own wedding may sound daunting, but Macy found it beneficial.

“I went into our wedding day less stressed than most brides because I knew exactly what to expect. I knew the vendors I wanted to work with because I had worked with them on other weddings,” she explained.

Even an experienced event planner can run into a few challenges on her wedding day.

“The seating chart was definitely difficult. It was hard to get everyone’s RSVP and a final guest count. I had to redo our seating chart 3-4 times just because people kept cancelling or adding more people,” Macy said. “My advice to a bride-to-be is to have a solidly set guest list and not to change it.”

Macy offers the following advice to anyone planning on getting married soon, “Explore your options with the various vendors. You don’t necessarily need to book with the first ones you meet with.”

And while it’s tempting to try to be a host to your guests, remember that it’s your special day.

“Stay by your new spouse the whole night. It’s the start of your new life together and you should be by each other’s side as much as possible,” Macy added.
